The Basic of How Dogs Think and Learn
If you want to succeed in house training a puppy, you need to understand how dogs think and learn.


You might be thinking: "It will be cool if there is a device that can convert dog language to human understandable language or vice verse, so that I can communicate better with my dog." Well, based on the current technology, this is only possible in our dream.

I may surprise you; the fact is dogs do not think as all! Dogs react or response through motivation and drive. When dogs feel good about something, they will continue to have that behavior. Ok, may be dogs do "think". They think in sensory impressions like visual, sound and odor.


Some example:
When it is almost time to feed your dog, I guess your dog will be looking at you. In her mind, she probably imagine the words that you usually say (eg: "meal time") or the sound of the opening of the dog food can during her meal time or image of you carrying the dog bowl (even there is nothing in the bowl!).

Food treat is a very good motivator for dog. So, in order for she to get the treat from you, her mind probably learns to associate what is the command that you give her during that time (eg: "sit") and how she needs to react (she needs to sit down).

Human: "Sit" command + the dog is sitting = give her the food treat.
For us, we will only give the dog treat only when we say "Sit" and she is sitting.


Dog: Food treat = "sit" sound + I need to put my butt on the floor.
For dog, when she hears the sound "sit", she understands that she has to put her butt on the floor in order for her to get your treat.

Four Dog Learning Stages
Acquisition
By definition, acquisition means the act of acquiring something. In our case, it is the training that we give our dogs. Dogs basically acquire the knowledge of the training when they are motivated to do so. Normally, we motivate our dogs by using food treat as reward. So, a dog will choose to engage in an action again and again so that she can continue to receive the rewards.


Automation
Automation is when your puppy performs certain action to a particular command without being lured. Let's say your puppy has passed the acquisition stage with accuracy of 90%. You may slowly reduce the dog treat when asking your puppy to perform the same action. Until your puppy reaches a stage where she is able to perform actions without the food treat, then she is in the automation stage.


Generalization
After the automation stage, you may further generalize the actions that she needs to perform. How? You may ask different people give the command or ask your puppy to perform the action in different locations or both. You may slowly change one aspect as a time. Your puppy will learn that she needs to perform the actions in any situation when commands are given.


Maintenance
In order for your dog to continuously behave or perform certain actions based upon your command, you will have to maintain the association of her sensory with the actions. So, refresher training from time to time is needed. In any case when your dog has any accident in your house, this is the time you will have to repeat the puppy house training.


Step-by-step House Training a Puppy Guide
I have included the four dog learning stages in the guide of the 7 days house training a puppy. This is a general guide which can be applicable for most dog breeds. Please adjust the in home dog training plan according to your needs.


First Day
Your puppy is in acquisition stage. She is learning to get use with your house and is learning some basic commands in potty training a puppy and crate training. She has been repeatedly trained with the command that you have selected for potty training, crate training and meal time.


Second Day 
Your puppy is still in acquisition stage but slowly move to automation stage. Same like the first day, your puppy has been repeatedly trained with the same commands during potty training, crate training a puppy and meal time. Additional to that, she is introduced to her collar and leash. This is to train her to recognize the path from her crate to the elimination spot. All these actions are repeatedly done with the same person and same location. Your puppy should slowly associate commands in the house training.


Third Day
The third day is practically repetation of the things in the second day. You will realize that your puppy's actions will be more automated.


Forth Day
The forth day is the day to change one of the variables. For example, during the potty training, you can ask a different person to bring her to the elimination spot and use the same command you have used. She is now in the generalization stage. She needs to know that different people give the command, the response should be the same. During the puppy obedience training, you may also ask a different person to give the command.


Fifth Day
With no doubt, her automated acts will happen more often. During the obedience training, you may change to a different location. She is still in generalization stage. But, change location during the potty training is not advisable. You need to understand that some trainings can be generalized but some can not. Generalization is more applicable to obedience training.


Sixth Day
If your puppy has reached the generalization stage during obedience training, then you may introduce more different commands to her one at a time. But remember to repeat the previous commands so that you can maintain her behavior (maintenance stage).


Seventh Day
This day is maintenance stage and I believe you have successfully housebroken you puppy! Congrats! You can slowly move on to the next step which is teaching your advance puppy obedience training, leash training a puppy, collar training, dog clicker training, agility training and more.

For most young puppies biting is a perfectly natural and essential phase to go through, especially when they are teething.


Puppies love to sink their sharp little fangs into just about anything during this teething stage, including the hands and feet of their owners. In some cases it's like you've brought a snappy alligator into your home, instead of the cuddly little puppy you had hoped for.

The good news is that most puppies can be trained to regulate and minimize the biting pretty easily. The sooner you start to educate your puppy in bite inhibition (having a soft mouth) the easier it will be - for all concerned.

Puppy socialization and bite inhibition training go hand in hand.
Never slap or hit your puppy in the face. This does not work! Your puppy will just think you are playing or could become afraid of you. This may even lead to some much bigger problems than simple puppy nipping.

While you are trying to stop your puppies from biting, never play tug of war, wrestling or chase type games with them. This only encourages the biting and nipping.


Whichever method you choose to train your puppy the golden rule is be consistent. This means that you and anyone else who comes into contact with your puppy must enforce your chosen strategy every time your pup takes a nip.
If you don't clearly communicate to your dog that the biting is unacceptable, he will not know he is doing anything wrong. It's up to you to show him what is acceptable behavior, don't just expect your puppy to know this! (You are really taking on the role of his littermates for this task).


Another (extreme) reason puppies can bite is if they are trying to assert their dominance over you. If this is the case with your puppy, it must be stopped immediately. When you have a dominant puppy his biting will only be the beginning of many behavioral problems. Stop Your Puppy From Biting - Proven Techniques


Your goal to start with is to teach your puppy how to control the force of his/her biting. Your puppy's littermates will initiate this process and then it is up to you to continue on with it when your new puppy arrives home. This will ensure (not guarantee) that if your dog does bite someone in the future the damage will be minimized. When you have given your puppy sufficient feedback regarding the strength of his bite only then can you begin to reduce the prevalence of the biting behavior.

If you catch the biting problem early on it may be easy to rectify. Just try to redirect the biting from your flesh to a toy or chew bone. For very young puppies this method is often all you'll need do. As soon as your pup starts to bite your hands just let out a firm "No!" and replace your fingers with the chew toy (or ice cube if your puppy is teething).


This is probably the most popular method and my personal favorite. Make your puppy think he is hurting you each time he has a nip at you. This method replicates the way dogs sort out this biting amongst themselves. When puppies are biting and nipping each other it only stops when one puppy lets out a yelp. We can use this natural way dogs learn by letting out an Ouch! or an Arrr! every time one of our puppy's bite. The trick is to startle your dog with your voice, and then pull away and stop playing with your puppy for a while. Your pup will soon learn that when he starts to bite, his playmate (you) goes away.
Teach your puppy the obedience training command "Leave It!". This method works great but is more suitable for older puppies.
In bad biting cases as soon as your puppy latches onto your hand say "No!" and quickly put your thumb inside his mouth under his tongue, and your other finger under his chin. Hold it there for about 10 seconds (not too tightly). This will feel uncomfortable to your puppy plus he won't be able to bite you.
"Always Praise And Reward A Gentle Mouth And Ignore Or Withdraw From Inappropriate Nipping"




Again if your puppy has a severe biting problem you can try this training technique. Put on a pair of gloves and apply a foul tasting substance to them (something your dog doesn't like). Your dog will soon learn that if he bites you, it won't be tasty! This method produces a strong negative association to your dog every time he decides to bite you. Some dogs are smart enough to realize that when you take your foul tasting gloves off, it is fine to sink their fangs into you again!
For older puppies (around 6 months) this is a sure fire technique to stop puppy mouthing. Put a pinch or choke collar on your puppy and each time he bites you give the lead a short sharp tug. This correction will form an unpleasant association to your dog every time he bites you. It won't take him long to stop. Some trainers believe this method to be fairly extreme, and I agree that you would only need to call on it in very rare circumstances - I have never needed to go to this level. I believe it's far more effective to educate your puppy rather than inflicting punishment or trying to extinquish a behavior altogether.
How to stop a puppy from biting - these methods have been recommended to me, but I have never tried them myself:


Spray your puppy with water every time he starts nipping.
Fill up an empty can with rocks or coins. Each time your puppy starts biting say No! and give the can a shake. Apparently puppies hate this rattling noise.
If you're worried that you may have an overly aggressive puppy on your hands, please seek the advice of an experienced animal behaviorist or dog trainer.

How To Potty Training A Puppy

This is the steps of how you Potty Training a Puppy

The goal of potty training a puppy is to make sure that your dog NEVER eliminates inside your house or she eliminates in a designated elimination spot inside your house.

Potty training for dogs usually runs together with crate training a puppy.

Please remember that dogs need to eliminate in the following events:

• Wake up in the morning

• After meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner)

• After playing

• After a nap

• After a walk

• Before sleep

The belows are the benefits of potty training your dogs:

• Your dog will never have accident inside the house.

• Your dog knows where to go when she needs to eliminate.

Suggested Potty Training Dogs Schedule
Different age of dogs or puppies have different timing of elimination. The younger a dog, the more often she needs to eliminate in a day.

The below is the schedule of a puppy that is aged between 8 weeks to 3 months old.

• 6:00 a.m. After the dog wakes up, bring her outside for the first potty training of the day.

• 6:30 a.m. During the breakfast, you can train her to eat inside the crate (crate training) or near the crate. So that she will associate crate as a positive environment. Then wait for 15 min, bring her outside to eliminate.

• 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. I recommend a 45 minutes walk with your dog. Depends on what is your arrange activity. If there is a playtime, bring her to potty area after the play.

• 12:00 p.m. Lunch time. Bring her outside to elimination spot after lunch.

• 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Mixture of nap and playtime. Bring her to elimination spot after each activity.

• 6:00 p.m. Dinner. Dog potty training after 15 min.

• 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. One more trip to the potty area

• Midnight - Morning Young puppy would need another 2 or 3 trips of elimination during this time

Dog Potty Training Step-by-Step

• Bring your dog or puppy outside your house to the elimination spot that you selected.

• Let her smells around the area and when she smells her own odor, she will start to eliminate.

• At the same time she is smelling around, use the training command that you have selected. Eg: "Go Potty", "Potty Time", "Get Busy", "Do Your Business" and etc. ONLY select ONE!

• After she has done, praise her with "Good Girl".

Begin puppy training as soon as you bring your new puppy home - don't wait for bad habits to set in!
Now lets start with the dos...:


Always put puppy in a crate or tiny confined area when you cannot be watching him/her.


Set up a tiny room to be his own special place for the next couple of months. Paper the whole floor & put his food/water bowls & bed in corner. Scatter his toys all over the place.


Keep in mind make the crate a "happy place" Toys, blankets & treats work wonders.


Take puppy out every hours for potty breaks - & ALWAYS after eating, sleeping & excited play.


Always give lots of praise for toileting on cue & in the right place.


Always correct bad behaviour at the moment it is happening.

Puppy proof your house - keep tempting & risky items out of reach & out of sight.


Use a guttural or growl tone & a loud clap of the hands to correct.


Always praise puppy as soon as he/she stops.


Puppies require lots of sleep. When puppy is sleeping leave him be.


Keep in mind to finish every training session on a positive note - make it lots of FUN!


When playing along with your puppy do so quietly & gently.

The things below is what you NEVER EVER DO !!!


Use hands for punishment - hitting, grabbing, dragging & forcing the puppy down creates fearful submission or aggressive retaliation. 
Never-  Assume that he'll "grow out" of bad behaviour - it is your job to teach him right from wrong.


Never-  Encourage behaviour in a puppy that you don't need to see in an adult dog - eg. biting hands, leaping up.


Never-  Use your dog's name in a hostile tone - his name ought to be a positive.


Never- Reprimand after the fact - in the event you see facts, but have missed the bad behaviour - it is late!

Never-  Give your puppy free run of the house - until he knows the rules he will do whatever suits him.


Never-  Leave children in charge of a puppy - adult supervision is imperative.


Never-  Let your puppy off leash unless the environment is entirely safe & secured.


Never-  Rub puppy's nose in his pee or poop - it is very traumatizing to the pup & makes NO sense at all.

Never-  Give in to your puppy's demands - if puppy wins, puppy rules!
